Lyre

Its sound box was made from the shell of a tortoise with a skin or hide stretched over the hollow underside. Strings were made from gut or sinew of some animal.

These were stretched over the sound-box and held in place by a cross-bar. Leather thongs or pegs would be used to tune the lyre.

There were usually seven strings.
