I've just finished re-organizing and updating my "reading workshop" book
    list.

Last fall, the list merged together several "favorite" and "recommended"
book lists from other sources (including Atwell's and Rief's books, plus
several web site lists). My goal was to have a list of titles which might
be useful in a "reading workshop" secondary classroom library -- not that
any classroom should include all these titles, but that any secondary
English/language Arts classroom bookcase might be attractive to students if
it includes 100+ properly-selected titles from this list (along with other
    books selected by the teacher).

Today, I finally merged in the Newbery award lists (winners and honor
books), and also the Oakland (Calif.) Unified School District's "core and
extended high school reading lists" (OUSD has a web site that provides
links to booknotes, lesson plans, and other resources about these
books). I also updated my own "inventory" information, adding at least 150
more books that I've bought at library book sales or at bookstores in the
    past few months.

I hope the list continues to be useful to other teachers. The list has now
grown to a nearly unmanageable 2,385 titles! Of course, a list this large
certainly includes many titles that I would NOT personally recommend. I
have tried to exclude any books which are "clearly inappropriate" for ANY
secondary classroom library, but of course some titles that would be fine
in some high school classrooms would be inappropriate for many middle
school classrooms. (If you do use the list, please tell me if you think
I've included any titles which are "clearly inappropriate" for ANY
    secondary classroom.)

I continue to use the list primarily as a checklist when browsing in used
bookstores and at library book sales. About half of the entries (including
all titles which appeared in two or more source lists) include ISBN numbers
(and links to book information at Amazon.com).

As always, the list is posted in two versions: a Microsoft Excel
spreadsheet (1.2 megabytes) and an HTML table (which bloats to nearly 5
megabytes). I strongly recommend that you download only the Excel version,
which is smaller and easier to use (feel free to disable macros if you're
worried about viruses or trojan horses).
